Access Control via an Eyrus Hand-scanner
As you know Eyrus Access Control is not only powerful but also very flexible. In terms, of you can achieve seamless access control by using any or all of these avenues via: turnstiles, gate arms, doors, hand scanners, check-in kiosks, etc.
In this article, we will explore:
- Using our Hand-scanners for Access Control.
- Best Practices
It is notable to point out, that our hand-scanners use our Visibility App and it will come with the app already loaded. The Visibility App is also accessible for iPhone or Android device in the app stores.
Best practices + Tips:
Best Practices:
- We suggest that any user participating in using a hand-scanner to scan people in and out of the site have their own individual log in for the hand-scanner.
- This creates more accountability and makes tracking down and issues a bit easier in the future. As in our platform you can see details such as Worker Name was scanned IN to the site at ZONE (Gate 1) by (Guard name) via mobile check in at (exact time).
- If that approach won't work for you then another option to consider is making separate log-in information for each guard booth or location you'd have someone using the hand-scanners.
- If that is also not feasible for you, you could certainly have one log-in that all the guards would use daily. (this option isn't suggested as it is tough to manage any redirection that may come up etc)
Tips:
- It's a good idea to charge the devices daily.
- If you ever need to do any troubleshooting on either the NFC or RFID device you engage the "settings" by hitting the power button on the right 5 times.
- Please note, the actual trigger button doesn't do anything on the NFC hand-scanner it is simply for comfort.

Getting Started
Once signed in, the app will guide you through the initial setup process. This includes selecting a project, zone, and mode to get started.
Zone Selection
The app will assign check in/out and access events to the selected zone. This can be changed in Settings or by tapping the Zone name at the top of the screen as seen below.
. .
Mode Selection
The Visibility app offers multiple modes to accommodate varying levels of security and access control on site. These modes can be changed dynamically depending on the use case.
Access Control Mode
Access Control mode displays the current access rights an individual has for the selected zone in the app. Tapping "Grant" or "Deny" will send the respective access event to the system. This behavior is similar to tapping an NFC card on a turnstile or door.
Note that the direction (IN/OUT) for this mode can be set during mode selection. You can choose the direction for each person scanned, or apply a fixed direction for everyone scanned.
NFC Only Setting (default settings)
If using the app solely for NFC badges (not Bluetooth) then we suggest selecting "NFC only" in the Badge Types setting. This will simplify the process and streamline the interface specific for NFC badge types.
When tapping an NFC badge the person's profile card will automatically display with their permission to the selected zone. "Allowed" workers are automatically checked-in or out when a fixed direction is set. "Not allowed" Denied workers will require a manual tap by the app user to record the IN or OUT attempt.
Other Modes
Visibility offers other modes as well depending on the use case for the project.
Read-only Mode
This mode simply displays the people within Bluetooth range of the mobile device using their LBE badge. Tapping a worker in the listing (or scanning an NFC badge) will display their profile information.
.
Check-in Mode
This mode provides an easy check in/out method for head count. As people are seen in range of the mobile device their profile will display an "IN" and "OUT" option. Tapping check in or out will check them in/out of the selected zone and send an access event to the Access Control Dashboard in Eyrus. This event listing will include the worker information, zone, direction, time of check-in, and app-specific information such as what user performed the action.
Auto Check-in Mode
Auto Check-in mode performs the same function as above, only check-ins are done automatically when the app sees a nearby person.
Note that the direction for this mode is set in mode selection and applied to all events.

Viewing and Reporting on Access Records
Access events also act as reads to the system, providing a more accurate view into on-site activity. This information is sent automatically from the app and is available in the Access Control Dashboard in Eyrus.
